Pontius Pilate travels to Jerusalem to judge Jesus who had declared himself "the son of God". Pontius Pilate, who alone held the power of life and death in Palestine, believes Jesus to be innocent. He proposes that the people choose: either Jesus or the thief and murderer, Barabbas must receive the death penalty. The crowd chooses to crucify Jesus. Pontius Pilate washes his hands of the affair saying "I am not responsible".
